Ethel Smyth: Five Sacred Partsongs                  (ed. Maks Adach)

This group of five settings of Lutheran chorales are also known as the Five Sacred Partsongs or Five 'German' Partsongs.

Dating from Smyth's Leipzig period (1877-85) where she studied under Carl Reinecke and Heinrich von Herzogenberg and was introduced to many of the great musical figures of the day such as Johannes Brahms, Clara Schumann and Hubert Parry, the partsongs are written in an intense and lush Brahmsian idiom. In order to provide comprehensive biographical information and links, commentary, translations, performance and editorial notes, and to keep abreast of current scholarship, such information will be added to our website and not printed within the leaflets; this also helps us to make prudent use of our special 'music' paper, and to keep the costs of the printed leaflets down.

Please note that No. 1, Komm Susser Tod, is available as a digital offprint and also as a printed leaflet.

Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 are available as printed leaflets only. Click here to order your printed scores.
